Create an Exchange Transport rule based on the recipient which is a group

Problem:
You need to create an Exchange transport rule to apply actions on the recipient address.  However if you select a distribution list as the recipient you will see the error SentTo predicate does not allow distribution groups. ‘YourGroup’.

Solution:
The solution to this is to chose “The Message > To box contains this person” and then select your group and it should now let you save.

  1. Hello

I have an issue with this workaround since all recipients of the message are affected by the rule, not just the detected recipients.

For example, let’s say you have a rule that rejects messages. If you use a recipient condition from the Recipients (dont allow Distribution List) , the message is only rejected for those specified recipients. For example, if the rule finds the specified recipient in a message, but the message contains five other recipients. The message is rejected for that one recipient, and is delivered to the five other recipients.

If you add a recipient condition from “The Message -> To box contains this person” , that same message is rejected for the detected recipient and the five other recipients.

Do you have any workaround to solve it?

    Regards,

  2. This does not work with Exchange Online. There is no “The message…” option in O365 rules. There is a “Add these recipients to the To box…” option but that gives the same error when attempting to send to a Distribution Group.

  3. In Exchange Online, THERE IS an option of “The message”. Just click on “More options…” somewhere below the conditions, actions, and exception part of the rule editing window.

    I hope that helps.
