Problem:
I frequently need to extract images from Microsoft Word documents and save them to a folder with a new file name that matches my article/naming convention. Saving individual images is slow and most of the workarounds found online involve saving the Word file as an html file which produces duplicate images.
Solution:
Take the following steps:
Rename the extension of your Word file to .zip
Extract the files to a folder using your favourite extraction tool. I use Winrar so right click and extract to..
Delete the .emf file and go to the Word/Media path to find the images
Download a free app called Bulk Rename Utility and go to the Word/Media path
You want to keep the numbering (so that the order is maintained) but change the file to your naming format. In the replace section add the word image and in the With section enter your naming format
Check you are happy with the new file names and then click rename
